double take: to prince edward island

I have a childhood memory snippet of visiting Canadian family and seeing a poster print of Alex Colville’s To Prince Edward Island in some family member’s house. The print was in a mundane spot, like the bathroom or a nook of sorts. But I noticed it. The image itself felt wonderfully familiar. And somewhere in my kid heart, I made a snuggley little corner for that image.

The second time I saw To Prince Edward Island was at The National Gallery of Canada. It was soon after we moved to Ottawa from Southern California. Seeing this artwork, in person, was like coming home. And since that viewing, seeing other pieces from Alex Colville’s oeuvre is like meeting extended family.

{Hey you readers. This category called double take is about one work of art that made an impact on you in some way. You. I would love to hear from you. What artwork have you seen in person that impressed something onto you? Here’s your chance to guest post. Write me at}

  1. I love Alex Colville and this is one of my all time favourites.

    You pose a delightful question! I’ll have to think about it and get back to you! The National Gallery is wonderful isn’t it? I kind of miss Maman. 😉

      • Well, thank you. I will see what I can come up with.

        Currently so blocked that I am thinking of becoming a selective mute. 😉

        I hear it happens, sometimes. This is a doozie!

        Your blog continually makes me happy.
